GEORGE ROBINSON. Farmer at The Hutts Farm, Grewelthorpe.

Northern Echo Friday 6 May 1881
Two outbreaks of foot and mouth disease have occurred near Ripon; one at Grewelthorpe where three beasts, the property of Mr George ROBINSON, Hutts Farm, Grewelthorpe are infected and the other at Givendale on Mr T H FODEN’s farm, one beast being reported on Wednesday and three yesterday as infected. The latter were part of a herd of 24 purchased at York last week.

In 1841 George age 6 is the youngest child of Chris & Ann Robinson. Other siblings were Jane, Christopher & Mary. living in Middleton Tyas.
In 1851 George age 17 was a shepherd in Middleton Tyas. He and his sister Mary were living with his aunt and uncle Hannah & Robert Harrison.
In 1861 he farmed age 25 or 27, on his own in Middleton Tyas with just a local girl as a housekeeper.
In 1871 he farmed at Middleton Tyas with Jane his wife.
In 1881 he was living Hutts Farm age 47 [Born C1834 in Middleton Tyas] Married to Jane of Brunton. Also with him is his 8 year old niece Florence Layfield. from Manchester. One of his servants is Ann Metcalfe of Grewelthorpe.
In 1891 he and Jane and Florence still living Grewelthorpe but the address is now The Reddings.
In 1901 he and Jane on their own in Grewelthorpe. He is still a farmer.
In 1911 George is now a widower and he is living with his nephew Thomas Robinson. a Farmer in Catterick.

George Robinson Farmer of Grewelthorpe was charged with having obstructed the highway, at Kirkby Malzeard on 14th May, by leaving a cart loaded with hay for a long and unreasonable time, being 35 minutes
without just cause. Was fined 2/6d and 8s costs.


GEORGE ROBINSON Born 1862 Pateley Bridge. He was a cloth finisher. Enlisted for the North Yorks Regt. in 1881. He served in Nova Scotia. Then he deserted for almost 2 years. In 1885 he was convicted of desertion He was imprisoned for 84 days. He was then posted to Egypt and India. He was part of the expeditionary force at the Battle of Giniss 1885-86. He received the Egyptian medal + star. Married in 1894 to Mary Elizabeth Lee. He was discharged in 1897. His conduct was described as irregular & indifferent.

JOSEPH ASHALL ROBINSON Born C1871 Pateley Bridge. Son of Mary Ann. of Bradford. He was a stamp maker. He joined the 4th West Yks Regt of the Royal Dragoons. in 1892. He was 5ft 9”. Fresh complexion. Brown eyes. Brown Hair. A Wesleyan. He only served for 2 months and was discharged.

SARAH ROBINSON. Born C 1860 Sawley. Unmarried in 1901. Farmer. living with brother William and Niece Hilda.
SYLVIA MAVIS ROBINSON. Born 4 Sept 1937. Low Laithe. Dau of John & Theodora. Married ? Pullen.

WALTER ROBINSON Born C1876. Son of Elizabeth. Farmer at Studley Roger, Ripon. Enlisted for West Yks Regt in May 1901. Service No. 6111. Height 5ft .6”. Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Dark brown hair. scar on left knee. Discharged one month later being described as a dangerous lunatic. Had brother Thomas.
