Richmond Family of Grewelthorpe and the surrounding area.
History of the surname Richmond.
This long-established surname, with variant spellings Richmond and Richmont, and French cognates Richemont and Richemond, is of French origin, and is locational from any of the various places in North France, named with the Old French elements “riche”, rich or splendid, plus “mont”, hill, or from Richmond in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The latter, recorded as “Richemund” in Early Yorkshire Charters, dated 1108. was named from one of the Richemonts in France immediately after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The surname was first recorded at the end of the 12th Century (see below), and other early recordings include: Geoffrey de Richemond, in the Register of the Freemen of the City of York, dated 1298. and Nicholas Richemonde (Somerset, 1327). Sir Henry Fitzroy (1519 – 1536), the natural son of Henry V111, was first Duke of Richmond. An interesting namebearer, recorded in the “Dictionary of National Biography”, was George Richmond (1809 – 1896), a portrait-painter, who had among his sitters William Wilberforce, Earl Granville and Macaulay.
The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Roger de Richemund, which was dated 1199, in “Carte Antiquae Rolls”, during the reign of King Richard 1, known as “Richard the Lionheart”, 1189 – 1199.

Letter from Robert Bonwell August 2020.
My family are also primarily from Kirkby Malzeard and the Dales and I found that one of the Richmonds lived in Bonwell House in Kirkby Malzeard.
I just wondered if you were able to tell me which dates they were there – I am just trying to find out more about the family in the village
If you can help Robert please contact the site.
Letter from Lynne Juniper March 2020. My relation Joan Mary Richmond died in June 2019. Her father was William Plowman, my Grandmother’s brother. Joan married David Richmond, originally from Warren Lane Farm, and subsequently of Ripon. They had no children. David had a younger brother John who was once Mayor of Ripon.
I have left it too late to contact them but stumbled on your amazing list while searching for them. There’s a great obituary article about David in the Yorkshire Post. it would be an interesting addition to your list of a David Richmonds, if you can link him to that line. Certainly the link with Warren Lane Farm indicates a possibility. What do you think?
See David’s obituary at end of this page.
Thanks to Lynda Goddard who wrote [July 2023].
My 2x great grandparents were Joseph Richmond and Anne Richmond (nee Riley). Anne was from Tadcaster. They married at St Peter`s Church (now Leeds Minster) in 1837. Joseph’s Father William’s occupation lists him as a brewer, Josephs occupation as a brewer and Anne`s fathers occupation a waggoner. They both died within two weeks of each other in March 1873 and are buried in Beckett Street Cemetery, Leeds.

Marion Moverley is seeking information.
I am looking for a MARK Richmond who married in Ripon and had a family and lived in Bondgate. His age in the 1851 census would suggest that he was born circa 1791, but I cannot find him . I have worked outwards from Ripon in ever increasing circles, and Mark seems to be a rare name in the Richmonds. Can anyone help.
Susan Richmond seeks information. March 2012.
We are looking for any information about Joseph Richmond born in England about 1889 and died in the U.S. – California in 1966.
His parents were Isabella Thompson and Richard Richmond (Lancashire).
Richard’s parents were Francis Richmond and Ellen Croskell.
The story is that after Joseph came to the U.S. he married briefly and had a son named Jerold Arthur Richmond born
1917 in Montana, USA. He disappeared shortly after.
Angela Cordingly contacted the site in Feb. 2014.
In my family tree I have a Mary Richmond born 1808 at Bramley Grange near Kirby Malzeard who dies 12 May 1870 at Tunstall Kirby Lonsdale. Her father was David Richmond from Laverton Hall I am assuming that David could be David born 1772 baptised at Grewelthorpe. Do you have information about David and his wives Mary and Ellen’s children. As his first wife was Mary is it possible they had a daughter called Mary in1808.
Any information gratefully received.

He was trustee for the local Mechanics Institute, rendering yeoman service in conducting all its undertakings. He had been a keen sportsman and was a useful member of the local cricket team.
His business as a builder’s joiner brought him into touch with nearly every resident, and also gained him a large circle of friends amongst the farming community by his periodical visits with the threshing machines. He was held in high esteem, being a considerate master and a conscientious workman, and his willing service will be missed.
Mr Richmond was a keen churchman, and a regular worshipper at St. Andrews Church, for which during his life he served in a threefold manner – chorister, bellringer and church warden. he was also a member of the local lodge of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, in which he held several offices.
To men like the late Mr. Richmond, village communities owe a great deal, and his death at the age of 41years, not only makes a gap but also removes a man of a sunny disposition and a cheerful giver.
He was the only son of Mrs. C. Richmond. [Caroline- see below]

“Whisker David.”
Report in Ripon Gazette May 1940.
Kirkby Malzeard Character.
Whisker David is the name Kirkby Malzeard’s 74 yr old milk “boy” is affectionately known by. If you enquire for Mr David Richmond of that village you will be asked “Do you want Whisker David or Lile David, Whisker’s nephew. You can quite well understand these affectionate nicknames as Richmond is quite a popular name in Nidderdale. Mr Richmond has an exceptionally fine beard. He has never used a razor, explaining “When I was a youth I had a bad attack of tonsilitis and a Dales doctor told me that if I grew a beard and never wore a scarf I would not have a recurrence or a sore throat. This advice has proved very true. I should know because I have tried it out for over 60 years.
For over 42 years he has followed the smallholders milk round and has estimated that he has served over half a million consumers in that time. He detests milk as a drink, just as most farmers detest rabbit, perhaps because they are too plentiful for them. He can recall his parents telling of couples from Upper Nidderdale coming on horseback to the only church then in the Dale, St. Andrews of Kirkby Malzeard, to get married. It was a long way from Middlesmoor & Lofthouse.
David’s wife looks after the pigs & poultry and is just as active as her husband. Asked “Who is Boss.?” David replied “I am the head of the house, she is the neck, she can turn the head which way she likes – sometimes.”

In 1916 he wrote to his sister Bertha. “Dear Bertha, Just a few lines in answer to your nice letter which I received. Well we have gone back into the trenches again but we have got into a more dangerous place than where we had been before.
There is a lot of talk about us getting a legion, but I don’t know whether it is right or not. I will tell you more about it in the next letter. Well I have not much news for you this time, we are having some very wet cold weather just now.
Tell my Mother that I received the parcel all right and I was very pleased with it. Give them all my best love also to uncle Tom and Lowther. So now I will close, with Best Wishes. From Billie xxx xxx.

The Shoulder of Mutton Inn about 1940.
The Shoulder of Mutton Inn, Kirkby Malzeard just before it closed for ever in 1959. Edward Richmond was publican from 1850’s to 1880’s. Then his son William took over.
Report in Ripon Gazette 12 March 1959 about the Shoulder of Mutton Inn, Kirkby Malzeard.
If the licence of the Shoulder of Mutton Inn, Kirkby Malzeard is withdrawn, it would not be any hardship on the public of Kirkby Malzeard, submitted Inspector Mayhew at the adjourned Ripon Liberty Brewster Sessions last Wednesday [4th March]. The Inn, he said, had an average of about 3 customers a visit. and only a little over half a barrel of beer a week and a small quantity of spirits were sold. The Inn is owned by Hepworth & Company, Ripon, a subsiduary company of Vaux Breweries, Sunderland. The present licensee is Mr William Hall who took over the licence on November 3rd 1958.
Inspector Mayhew said the premises had been very well conducted. There were 2 grounds for considering the question of redundancy, one being that the premises were structurally unsuitable. Supervision from the bar was practically impossible, facilities were out-dated, and there was only 1 toilet.
The licence was not necessary because other licensed houses in the village provided adequate facilities. 2 other licensed houses were sited much nearer the built up area.
The age of the building would appear to present an almost impossible task to bring the premises up to present day standards. Trade figures showed there was insufficient custom to provide a reasonable livelihood for the licensee.
P.S.Audsley said that according to records the Inn was licensed in 1903. There was however no doubt to his mind that it was licensed at a much earlier date, it was probably one of the oldest buildings in the village.
He recalled that in 1956 the Licensing Justices requested provision of a ladies toilet and suggested it should be provided inside the large room on the ground floor. A reasonable estimate would be in the region of £200.
The Inn was a typical village house, and it had been reasonably maintained according to its condition and age. It had now come to the end of its period and it would be unfair to the licensee to refuse the license because of structural unsuitabiity, for if they did they were depriving the owner of the right to compensation.
The Inn closed the year following this report.
In 1987 the house was listed as a Grade II Listed Building.

Report in Middlesborough Daily Gazette. 24.Oct 1887.
On Saturday a determined suicide was committed in the Shoulder of Mutton Inn, Kirkby Malzeard. A photographer named Arthur Dean who has been two or three weeks in the neighbourhood, and whose wife resides at Manchester, was in the back yard, when he was seen to mix something in a bottle. He afterwards went into the house and ordered a pint of beer, into which he emptied the contents of the bottle. Immediately he drank it he sprang up. exclaiming, “ Oh. I want a drink,” and fell down dead. Before drinking the beer he wrote letters, which were found upon him. They were of an affecting character, addressed to his wife stating that drink was the cause of his suicide, and he hoped God would forgive him, as he was tired of his life.
