CALVERT FAMILY.

History of the surname Calvert.
This interesting surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is an occupational name for a tender of cattle, deriving from the Middle English “calfhirde”, a development of the Olde English pre 7th Century “calf” meaning calf, plus “hierde”, herdsman. Job descriptive surnames originally denoted the actual occupation of the namebearer, and later became hereditary. The surname is now most widespread in North and North East England and in Northern Ireland. The surname dates back to the mid 13th Century (see below), and early recordings include: William Calvehird (1297) in the Subsidy Rolls of Yorkshire, and John Calverde of York (1309), in the Calendar of Letter Books of the City of London. Variations in the spelling of the surname include Calverd and Calvard. A Coat of Arms granted to a Calvert family is black, on an inescutcheon within an orle of silver owls, three black guttes. The Crest is a silver owl black guttee. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Warin le Calfhirde, which was dated 1269, in the “Feet of Fines of Yorkshire”, during the reign of King Henry 111, known as “The Frenchman”, 1216 – 1272.

Letter from Shirley dated Jun 2015.
I believe my grandfather, James Calvert, who lived from about 1936 to 1963 at Tower Hill Farm, Grewelthorpe, on the road to Mickley, was born of a James Calvert who originated at a farm just outside Pateley Bridge, called High Intake Farm (sounds a bit like Wuthering Heights!) and my great grandfather James Calvert was brought from Liverpool on horseback by his grandfather. I believe that my grandfather had a very Dickensian childhood on account of his father/grandfather having being unable to show much love or kindness towards him. My grandfather always appeared to me a very gentle and kind man, often buying his 4 grandchildren, who spent early years at Tower Hill, sweets and presents – perhaps because he had not experienced much happiness in childhood.
I wonder if Douglas might perhaps write to my mother, [address on file] My Mother may recall shreds of information that might help piece together some of the story. My mother was born in 1928 and her memory is still good.
My sister is well known in the Grewelthorpe and Masham area, – she is Mrs Flo Grainger, chair of the Masham Parish Council, and living at the Old Station, Masham – you may well know her. Flo was the oldest of the 4 grandchildren at Tower Hill and she also has a lot of information,
Letter from Douglas Calvert March 2014.

Carol Metcalfe has the following information re Wm and Ann.
If you can solve this puzzle please contact the site.
Message sent May 2012.: I note that the website gives the parents of Wm Calvert of Skellgill born Greygarth as Wm and Rachel however K. Malzeard parish record has: bap 19.10.1794, Wm son of John Calvert of Greygrete
also William’s MI is on the reverse of John and Isabella’s. [See image of grave at end.]
Finally Wm is on John’s death cert as present at the death
the site also has Wm’s wife as Ann Backhouse – I had believed his wife was Ann Watson from ripon parish record.
Carol wrote again Sept 2022.
I said that I believed William Calvert of skellgill to have married Ann Watson. I have since seen the will of Thomas Watson of eavestone in which he mentions his daughter Ann, and son in law William Calvert of skellgill.
This would appear to provide conclusive evidence of my earlier comments.
